Completing Pilates teacher training is an exciting milestone. Putting that knowledge into practice takes experience. You’re learning to cue clients, observe movement, choose modifications, and keep a session flowing.
The ID Pilates Apprenticeship Program helps developing instructors build those skills through observation, self-practice, teaching opportunities, and mentorship. It offers a structured way to apply what you’ve learned while receiving guidance from experienced instructors.
Learn by Observing and Practicing
Apprentices begin with observation and self-practice, building a stronger understanding of both the Pilates repertoire and the teaching process.
Observation is about more than watching which exercises an instructor selects. You’ll pay attention to how they explain movement, respond to clients, offer modifications, manage transitions, and make programming decisions.
Self-practice gives you time to explore exercise setup, spring resistance, movement mechanics, and the purpose behind each exercise. It also creates an opportunity to practice cues aloud and think through how you would teach the movement to someone else.
Build Teaching Experience Gradually
After completing the introductory observation and self-practice requirements, apprentices begin assisting and teaching assigned sections of group Reformer classes with a mentor or another approved ID Pilates instructor.
Teaching responsibilities increase as skills develop. You’ll practice communicating clearly while observing clients, managing equipment, and responding to what is happening in the room.
Apprentices also arrange free practice-teaching sessions on their own time. These sessions provide opportunities to prepare a plan, teach a sequence, and learn from the experience.
Receive Guidance From a Mentor
Each apprentice works with a mentor who provides feedback, answers questions, and helps identify areas for continued development.
The program includes orientation, weekly check-ins, a midpoint review, and a final review. Scheduled teaching sessions provide additional opportunities for individual feedback.
During the assistant and practice-teaching stage, your mentor can offer real-time guidance and answer questions as you teach. Later, during apprentice teaching, the mentor observes your ability to lead a session and discusses feedback with you afterward.
This ongoing communication helps turn feedback into practical goals for your next session.
Progress Through Demonstrated Competency
Apprenticeship progress depends on both completed requirements and demonstrated teaching skills.
At the midpoint evaluation, your mentor reviews areas such as exercise knowledge, equipment safety, cueing, movement observation, modifications, programming, and professionalism. Apprentices must meet the required competency standard and receive approval before progressing to teaching paid clients or independently leading group classes under the ID Pilates Apprentice Instructor designation.
If more practice is needed, the mentor identifies specific areas to work on before reassessment. The goal is to help apprentices take on greater responsibility when they are ready.
Once approved for independent teaching under the ID Pilates Apprentice Instructor designation, apprentices are eligible to earn a wage for assigned paid teaching sessions and classes. Paid teaching opportunities depend on studio needs and availability and are not guaranteed.
Learn the Responsibilities Beyond Teaching
Working with clients also involves preparation, communication, and studio operations.
Apprentices learn relevant ID Pilates procedures and Mindbody responsibilities, including reviewing client information, understanding check-in procedures, maintaining confidentiality, and knowing when to refer a question to management.
These skills help developing instructors become reliable members of a studio team.
Keep Growing as an Instructor
The apprenticeship is designed to help bridge the gap between teacher training and the practical responsibilities of teaching. It provides space to ask questions, apply feedback, and build confidence through experience.
Completing the program does not guarantee ongoing employment with ID Pilates. It is an educational opportunity focused on developing safe, thoughtful, and effective teaching skills.
