Pilates Teacher Training FAQs

Your Questions, Answered

Thinking about becoming a Pilates teacher can be exciting, but it can also come with a lot of questions.

Do I have enough Pilates experience? Do I need to start with Mat? Do I have to commit to Comprehensive Teacher Training right away? And what actually happens after the training weekends are over?

Whether you’re seriously considering becoming a Pilates instructor or you’re simply curious about taking your practice to the next level, we’ve answered a few of the questions we hear most often about Teacher Training at ID Pilates.

Do I need to be an advanced Pilates practitioner before starting Teacher Training?

Not at all. You don’t need to be able to perform every advanced exercise or have the “perfect” Pilates practice to become a great teacher.

Before beginning Teacher Training, we require at least 10 Pilates classes or private sessions, including at least one at ID Pilates. This gives you some familiarity with the method before you begin learning Pilates from a teacher’s perspective.

More important than being advanced is a willingness to learn, practice, ask questions, and stay curious about movement.

Where do I start: Mat, Reformer, or Comprehensive Teacher Training?

Mat 1 is the foundation of our Teacher Training Program and is required before you can teach Reformer. It introduces essential Pilates principles, movement concepts, and teaching skills that you’ll continue to build on throughout Reformer and equipment training.

From there, your path depends on your goals. You might continue with Mat 2, move into Reformer training, or continue building toward Comprehensive Teacher Training.

And you don’t have to figure out your entire training path before you begin.

Do I have to complete Comprehensive Teacher Training all at once?

No. One of the benefits of our Teacher Training Program is the flexibility to build your education over time.

You can enroll in individual modules and gradually work toward Comprehensive Teacher Training at a pace that works for your schedule, goals, and budget.

Our Comprehensive Program includes Mat, Reformer, Cadillac/Trapeze Table, Wunda Chair, and Barrels. If Comprehensive Training is ultimately your goal, we’re happy to help you map out a path for getting there.

What actually happens during a Teacher Training weekend?

Teacher Training is much more than learning a list of exercises.

Training weekends combine movement, discussion, observation, and hands-on teaching practice. You’ll learn the repertoire while exploring the “why” behind the movement, including anatomy, biomechanics, modifications, progressions, cueing, and how to work with different bodies.

You’ll also begin practicing your teaching skills and receiving feedback so you can gradually develop your own voice and confidence as an instructor.

Am I certified when the Teacher Training weekends are over?

Not quite. Your training weekends provide the educational foundation, but becoming certified also requires you to put what you’ve learned into practice.

Depending on your training, you’ll complete additional requirements such as observation, self-practice, practice teaching, studying, and a final assessment.

These hours aren’t just boxes to check. They’re an important part of becoming a teacher. They give you time to experience the repertoire in your own body, observe experienced instructors, practice working with clients, and become more comfortable actually teaching the material you’ve learned.

What happens after I become certified?

Certification is an important milestone, but it’s also the beginning of your development as a Pilates teacher.

Some graduates begin pursuing teaching opportunities right away, while others want additional time, mentorship, and hands-on experience before teaching independently.

ID Pilates offers continuing education opportunities as well as an Apprenticeship Program designed to help developing teachers bridge the gap between Teacher Training and confidently working with clients in a studio setting.

Your path doesn’t have to look exactly like anyone else’s.

Still Have Questions About Teacher Training?

These are just a few of the questions we hear from prospective trainees. We’ve put together a complete Teacher Training FAQ page covering prerequisites, individual training modules, certification hours, payment options, NPCP verification, testing, apprenticeship opportunities, and more.

And if you’re still not sure where to begin, reach out to us. We’re happy to talk about your Pilates experience, your goals, and which Teacher Training path might be the best fit for you.
